A cross-sectional study of common diseases among the elderly in 6 cities of China

Objective To study the status and characteristics of distribution of 6 chronic diseases found in elderly population and their influence on the quality of life in 6 different cities of China. Methods 8 252 elderly subjects, aged 60 years and older in the urban and rural areas of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xian, and Shenyang were investigated using a cluster random sampling method. Results The rude prevalence of prostate hyperplasia, deafness, cataract, osteoarthropathy, bone fracture, and constipation among the elderly were found to be 43 7%,33 7%,46 8%,38 7%,13 3% and 10 9% respectively. The prevalence rates of the six diseases in the elderly were lower when revealed by previous diagnoses than those obtained from the present medical examination( P <0 01). In addition, the rude prevalence rates were lower in rural areas than in urban areas ( P <0 01) . Conclusions The prevention and treatment of these chronic diseases in the elderly should be strengthened, especially in rural areas.
