Protecting privacy during video recording resuscitations

The practice of video recording resuscitations is reviewed with respect to the following issues:

• ? the protection of patients' rights to privacy during and after recordings
• ? the non status of recordings as a medical record
• ? the need for staff acceptance and institutional approval prior to beginning recordings
• ? the use of recordings for quality improvement audit, critical incident monitoring, instructional feedback and resuscitation review conferences
• ? the recommendation that recordings are then erased, and
• ? the utility of legislative protection to facilitate the process of quality improvement.
