Effect of Scalding on Beta-endorphin Neurons in the Rat Hypothalamus

Abstract:Effect of scalding on secretory function of beta-endorphin neuron in the arcuate nucleus of the rat hypothalamus was studied semiquantitatively using immunocytochemistry and image analysis. The results showed that the number of beta-endorphin neurons and area of positive products reduced significantly (P<0.05) at 0h and 1 h after scalding, while the number of positive varicose-like fiber in the median eminence descending from the arcuate nucleus increased slightly. These results implied that the amount of beta-endorphin in the blood, which came from the arcuate nucleus of the rat hypothalamus through hypophyseal portal system, increased at 0 h and 1 h after scalding. And at 2, 3, 4h after scalding the number of beta-endorphin neurons and area of positive products in the arcuate nucleus were not different significantly compared with those of the control group, indicating that the rates of secreting and synthesizing of beta-endorphin in the neurons were paralleled.
