Correlation between maternal-infant bonding and depression in early postpartum mothers

Objective To investigate the status and correlation of maternal-infant bonding and postpartum depression in early postpartum period.Methods A total of 413 puerpera who underwent postpartum review in the outpatient department of a general hospital in Wuhan were enrolled as the research subjects,with the convenience sampling method,from August to October 2018.The general information questionnaire,postpartum bonding questionnaire(PBQ)and Edinburgh postnatal depression scale(EPDS)were used in the survey.Results The median M score was 12.0(6.0,19.0),at a low level,indicating that the maternal-infant bonding was good.The rate of normal mother-infant bonding was 80.9%,mild abnormal bonding at 17.4%,potential rejection at 1.5%,and explicit rejection at 0.2%.The score of postpartum depression was at a low level(7.2±4.6),with an incidence rate at 1.0%.There was a significant positive correlation between the postpartum depression and maternal-infant bonding(r=0.419,P<0.001).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that postpartum depression was a risk factor of the maternal-infant bonding within the controlled general information(P<0.05).Conclusions The incidence of maternal-infant bonding disorder and postpartum depression should not be ignored.Postpartum depression is a risk factor that affects the maternal-infant bonding.Attention should be paid to the early detection of maternal and infant bonding disorder and postpartum depression and targeted intervention strategies should be in place to promote the health in both of the maternal mother and infant.
