Status quo and the influencing factors of life meaning perception in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

Objective To investigate the life meaning perception in breast cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy as well as the influencing factors to the life meaning perception.Methods A total of 185 hospitalised breast cancer patients in our hospital were surveyed with the convenience sampling method.The questionnaires for patient general information,life meaning perception(LMP),family APGAR Index(APGAR)and post-traumatic growth inventory(PTGI)were completed to investigate the life meaning perception of the patients.Results The total score of life meaning perception in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy was(40.77±8.85).The total score of family function APGAR index was(8.93±2.15).The total score of post-traumatic growth was(70.58±13.74).The level of LMP was positively correlated with family function and post-traumatic growth,respectively(P<0.01).There were differences in LMP among the patients with different educational level,employment,income,source of medical bill payment and number of child(P<0.01).The multiple linear regression analysis showed that the post-traumatic growth and education were the main factors affecting the LMP,and a 50.4%of the variation of life meaning perception was influenced by the two factors.Conclusions The level of LMP in breast cancer patients who had undergone chemotherapy is above average.It appears that higher education and post-traumatic growth would result in a higher LMP.In the intervention procedure of LMP,it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate the education level,employment status,etc.of the patients,and therefore to work out individualised psychological intervention plan in order to assist the patients establishing a positive psychological state during the cause of chemotherapy.It is necessary to constantly adjust the intervention plan according to the individual situation so as to enhance the LMP of the patients.
