| Abstract: | Of 2521 cases of abdominal operations from Sept 1986 to June 1990, 18 (0.71%) were complicated with ARDS which yielded a mortality of 83.3%. In the 18 cases, 9 had operation due to infection of biliary-pancreas system, 6 had a history of chronic bronchitis and 6 had pneumonia. To analyse the cause of the high mortality, we found that ARDS was often diagnosed during its late stage. Therefore when respiration is over 30. times per minute, PaO_2 lower than 8.0 kPa even after nostril oxygen therapy, ventilator and PEEP should be used within 24 hours. |
