The effects of human atrial natriuretic peptide on retinal artery and umbilical artery hemodynamics in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension

AIM: To investigate the effects of human atrial natriuretic peptide (hANP) on the hemodynamics of central retinal artery (CRA) and umbilical artery (UA) in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension. METHODS: BZThirtytwo patients with severe pregnancy induced hypertensionwere randomized to two groups and infused intravenously with hANP 6 g/kg in 50 g/L glucose 100 mL or 50 g/L glucose 100 mL as placebo for 30 minutes respectively. The CRA and UA blood flow velocity waveforms were determined with Doppler ultrasonography before and immediately after the infusion of either hANP or placebo. RESULTS: hANP significantly reduced the CRA pulsatility index (PI), the CRA resistance index (RI), the UA systolic/diastolic (S/D) ratio (P<0.01 respectively) and the PI and RI of UA (P<0.05 respectively) compared with baseline. There were no significant changes in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: hANP dilates the central retinal and umbilical arteries, indicating that hANP may improve the pathophysiological changes of the central and placentalfetal circulation in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension.
