EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON ABSORPTION OF CHLORHEXIDINE IN ANIMALS
Abstract:Chlorhexidine is originally in powder form which is poorly soluble in water. It became water soluble after the powder was dispersed and converted into drops form, and thus can be used for disinfection of drinking water and prevention of bacterial dysentery. The contents of the two forms of chlorhexidine in biological specimens were measured with liquid chromatography. It was indicated in experiment that chlorhexidine powder was slightly absorbed in animal body, while chlorhexidine drops was absorbed better. When a single dose of 200 mg/kg drops was given intragastrically to rabbits, the blood level of chlorhexidine rose to peak after 10 hr and was still measured to be 0.4 μg/ml 70 hr later. When a same single dose was given intragastrically to rats, the chlorhexidine content was found to be highest in liver, followed in decreasing order by kidney, heart, lung and brain after 48 hr. The drug remained in various tissues for about 4 days. It could still be recovered from intestine at a recovery rate of 40% after 144 hr and disappeared completely only after 192 hr. The amount of chlorhexidine excreted in urine reached a peak after 48 hr and disappeared after 120 hr.
