Tendency of Quality of Life in Patients with Esophageal Carcinoma Treated with 3-D Conformal Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy Concurrent

Objective To compare the 1-year quality of life in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus,who have received concurrent chemoradiation(CRT).Methods A total of 60 patients were enrolled into this study.Quality of life assessments were performed using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-OES24 modules.QOL questionnaires were given before therapy and at the 40 Gy during radiotherapy,the completion of radiotherapy,and then 3,6 and 12 months after the completion of radiotherapy,respectively.Results 60 patients were assessed.It has been observed that the scores of global health status,physical functioning,role functioning and social functioning during the radiotherapy,deteriorated temporarily,but it were significant improved after 12 months after the completion of radiotherapy when compared with those before radiotherapy(P<0.05).Nausea and vomiting,pain and appetite loss scales scores rapidly recovered to the baseline level after 6 months after the completion of radiotherapy,and significantly improved after 12 months after the completion of radiotherapy(P<0.05),although they were worsened during therapy.Conclusion CRT significantly improved the quality of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.In terms of QOL CRT is a feasible modality for esophageal cancer.
