Clinic Investigation on Mercury in Maternity and Newborn and their Correlation

Objective Clinical investigation on the level of mercury in the blood and hair of maternity and newborn,as well as their correlation in the coastal city.Methods Experiment was performed for pregnant women who gave birth between Apirl,2011 and July,2011 in Quanzhou Maternal and Children Hospital,the tested samples included blood,hair as well as umbilical cord blood of maternities and their newborns.RA-915+ mercury analyzer was employed to determinate the mercury concentrations in different samples based on zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry.Results The experimental results showed that the mean concentration of mercury in the blood of maternity was(2.9±1.7)μg/L,while the mean concentration of mercury in umbilical cord blood was(3.7±2.8)μg/L,which was 1.27 times higher than that of maternity.The mean concentration of mercury in the hair of maternity was(681.1±531.5)μg/g,while the mean concentration of mercury in the hair of newborn was(556.7±301.9)μg/g.Not only in the umbilical cord blood,but also in hair,the concentrations of mercury in the male newborn were higher than that of female.The percentage of blood samples from maternity and newborn whose Hg content exceeded the standard established by USA to the total samples were 20.8% and 14.6%,respectively.Conclusion A amount of pregnant women and their newborn suffered from health risk of Hg exposure despite most of investigated samples in this region had no exposure risk.
