Metaphor Analysis of Human Body Structure from the Perspective of Courtyard Style Architecture

Ancient Chinese physicians understand the human body mainly with the help of metaphor,and archi?tectural metaphor assumes a particularly important role in it.Having similar spatial characteristics with architecture,the human body is regarded as a building,and gradually the basic metaphor“body is architecture”is developed.This article analyzed the metaphorical process of the ancient physicians using architecture to construct the human body from the following three aspects:the appearance of the courtyard versus the facial features of human body,the door of the building versus the gate of the human body,and the internal part of the courtyard verus the zang-fu(脏腑)organs of the human body.It is found that the arrangement of the facial and zang-fu spaces in human body are both roughly consistent with the layout of courtyard style architecture.Simultaneously,this paper reproduced the metaphorical mappings between architecture and human body in the mind of ancient physicians,revealing the metaphorical charac?teristics of languages and thinking ways in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and demonstrating the role of architec?tural metaphor in the construction of TCM theory.
