Abstract:Objective:To explore the short-term effect of low birth weight(LBW)on physical and mental development in infants. Methods:The physical, mental and psychomotor development of 100 LBW infants were regularly observed from birth till one year old and 43 full-term infants as controls. All infants received infant development test of Chid Development Center of China (CDCC),when they were one year old. Results:Both height and headcircumference in LBW group caught up with those infull-term infants( P >0.05),But in 1 501~1 999 g and≤1 500 g groups, the weight were lower than those in full-term infants.( P <0.05,0.001);In 2 000~2 045 g group,Both MDI(mental development index)and PDI(psychomotor development index)caught up with those in full-term infanes( P >0.05),But in <2 000 g group, bothMDI and PDI respectively were lower than those in full-term infants( P <0.001).Conclusion:It was very obvious that LBW had a negative effect on baby's mental and psychomotor development.
Keywords:low birth study development
