Sepsis is a complex syndrome resulting from the innate host response to invasive infection, and intes-tinal tract plays important roles in the development of sepsis. Glucagon like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is recognized as a spe-cific hormone that influences multiple functions specifically in the gastrointestinal tract, which improves the epithelial barrier capacity through decreasing transcellular and paracellular permeability, as well as reducing bacterical transloca-tion. GLP-2 are involved in the stimulation of crypt cell proliferation and the inhibition of apoptosis in the enterocyte. The properties of GLP-2 above indicate gut protection in sepsis.
