Predictors of dysphagia recovery after stroke

Dysphagia is a common symptom and severe complications after stroke. It can reduce the safety of oral intake and lead to malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, high mortality and a poor post-stroke outcome. Correct prediction of the recovery of post-stroke dysphagia is critical for clinicians in deciding on feeding patterns, taking proper rehabilitation measures and strengthening prevention of complications, which currently rely on physician’s subjective experiences and risk assessments. Because of the lack of a systematic prediction method and indicators, we systematically reviewed the literature concerning the prediction of swallowing recovery after stroke and summarized the chief predictors and models to guide individualized treatment for patients with dysphagia after stroke.
