Ten-year outcomes of subthalamic stimulation in patients with Parkinson's disease

Objective To assess the long-term clinical outcomes of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation(STN-DBS)for Parkinson's disease(PD).Methods 75 patients with PD underwent by STN-DBS were long-term followed up.The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS)was used to evaluate the“off”and“on”states of drugs before operation.At 1,3,5 and 10 years after operation,the drug“off”and“on”states were evaluated by UPDRS under the condition of STN-DBS continuous treatment,and the postoperative evaluation data were compared with the baseline data before operation.Results Compared with pre-operative UPDRS score,postoperative UPDRS score improved significantly.With the prolongation of postoperative time,the symptoms of patients in the“on”and“off”state of the drug were gradually aggravated.The postoperative equivalent dose of dopaminergic drugs was reduced.Conclusion STN-DBS can improve the motor symptoms of patients with Parkinson's disease for a long time.However,the improvement effect on the axis symptoms of patients is not good.
