The operative techniques of primary hyperparathyroidism

Objective To summarize the operative techniques and experiences of primary hyperparathyroidism(PHPT).Methods The clinical data of 25 cases of PHPT were analyzed retrospectively.Results Exploratory operations were performed in 24 cases,Postoperative pathology detected parathyroidoma in 19 cases,parathyroid hyperplasia in 3 cases,and parathyroid carcinoma in 2 cases.Primary foci were resected successfully in 22/24 cases (88%) with single operations,One case with a re-operation,and the other one with a third operation.23 patients gained a full release post-operatively.and the other one died of respiratory failure caused by fracture of multiple ribs.Conclusion Operation should be adopted once HPT was confirmed accompanying with positive clinical manifestations.The operation can be performed successfully with pre-operative site-specific findings.'Hot area" should be carefully explored when no positive site was found pre-operatively.
