Abstract: | Polymerization of vinyl monomers was studied in presence of cellulose (or silk), water, and carbon tetrachloride, and in absence of the usual radical initiators. It was found that the rate of polymerization of methyl methacrylate was strongly accelerated by the carbon tetrachloride; the efficiency of grafting, however, decreased markedly with increasing amount of carbon tetrachloride. A polymerization mechanism is proposed in which a macromolecule is part of a complex initiator and perhaps plays a role as a polymerization matrix. |
