Species composition and seasonal variation of culicoides in Lianyungang City in 2019

Objective To learn the species composition and seasonal fluctuation of culicoides in Lianyungang of Jiangsu Province in China.Methods Culicoides were collected once a week in Lianyuangang using light traps from April to November of 2019 at Lianyungang port,the quarantine farm of breeding cattles,the quarantine farm for slaughter cattles and slaughterhouse.Results A total of 2856 culicoides,belonging to 7 species,were collected in Lianyungang,and the dominant species was Culicoides homotomus accounting for 60.36%.Culicoides oxystoma was the dominant species at the port accounting for 74.8%.Culicoides homotomus was the dominant species in the quarantine farm of breeding cattles accounting for 74.75%,in the quarantine farm for slaughter cattles accounting for 61.69%,and in the slaughterhouse accounting for 65.71%.Culicoides puncticollis was found for the first time in Lianyungang.The active season of culicoides was from June to October,with a peak in September.The culicoides were mostly(54.52%)captured at temperatures of 21-25℃.The activity of culicoides decreased significantly in rainy and windy days.Conclusion The species composition and seasonal fluctuation of culicoides in Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province are preliminarily understood,which can provide reference for the prevention and control of culicoides.
