The relationships between diaper dermatitis and local microbial infection in neonates

40 cases of diaper dermatitis and 40 controls (aged from 1-9 days and hospitalized in the neonatological department from August 2001 to August 2002), were selected to observe the relationships between diaper dermatitis and local microbial infection in neonates. 6 cases including 5 males were detected infected with Candida albicans in the diaper dermatitis group (15%) while only 1 male was so in the control group (2.5%), with significant difference between them (P<0.05). Staphylococcus A and Staphylococcus aureus were detected in 3 cases and 1 case respectively in the former group but none was in the latter. Besides, other normal bacteria including Escherichia coli, enterococcus, cloaca, micrococcus and hay bacilli were found in both groups. The results indicated the Candida albicans in the local hips with diaper dermatitis were significantly more than that in the controls in number. Therefore, prophylactic antibacterial treatment of diaper dermatitis is necessary to prevent candidiasis and the secondary infection of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, in addition to keeping cleaning and desiccation and preventing skin damage in the treatment and nursing of neonate hip.
