Abstract: | Mental illness and alcohol and other drug disorders account for more disability than any other medical problem. One of the systems most affected by these disorders in the United States is the criminal justice system. This article provides an overview of the problem of behavioral health disorders in the justice system in addition to innovative programs that are contributing to a more humane and, potentially, cost-effective system of care in correctional and community settings. |
