Analysis on the Mental Health Status and Related Factors of Deaf Students

Objective To explore the mental health status and related factors of deaf students.Methods The sample consisted of 103 deaf students who were from Vocational Technical College in Changsha,Hunan.Symptom Checklist 90（SCL-90）,Adolescent Self-rating Life Events Check List（ASLEC）,Eysenck Personality Questionnaire（EPQ）,Social Support Rating Scale（SSRS）,and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire（SCSQ） were used to evaluate and analyze the results.The data were obtained through group test and analyzed with SPSS 12.0.Results Deaf students scored higher than normal students on SCL-90 sub-scales such as anxiety,somatization,depression,paranoid ideation and psychoticism.The differences were greatly significant between the two groups（2.131≤t≤10.149,P〈0.05 or P〈0.001）.Analysis of multiple stepwise regression showed that,the factors which influenced mental health status of deaf students were mainly life events scores,negative coping style,neuroticism,extraversion-introversion,social support and psychoticism.These factors could predicted mental health of deaf students（-2.853≤t≤5.537,P≤0.006）.Conclusion Mental health status of deaf students is poorer than that of normal students.Good Personality,coping style and social support will be helpful to promote the mental health status of the deaf students.
