Brain metastasis in osteosarcoma: a report of 7 cases

Objective To represent the incidence,clinical characteristics,treatment and outcomes of brain metastasis in oateosarcoma patients.Methods Seven oateosarcoma patients with brain metastasis were retrospectively studied from 2005 to 2017.Results Seven patients (2.1% 7 / 332) who were identified as brain metastasis in osteosarcoma (BMO) were treated in our center.All patients were adolescents and young adults,including 6 males and 1 female with a mean age of 18 years (range:9-23 years).Six patients had solitary brain metastasis and 1 patient had multiple brain metastases.Brain metastasis located in the frontal lobe in 5 cases.Common symptoms included headache,nausea and vomiting;symptoms of hemiplegia and epilepsy were seen in 2 cases;blurred vision and protopsis were observed in 1 case.All seven patients died within 13 months with the median survival time of 4 months (range:1-13 months).Surgery and radiochemotherapy improved survival quality than that of the simple radiotherapy.Conclusions There is an increase in the incidence of BMO and the prognosis remains dismal.Aggressive treatment may bring improved survival to well-selected patients.However,more researches about BOM are needed.
