Application of endoscopic ultrasonography combined with computed tomography in preoperative staging of gastric cancer

Objective To evaluate the clinical utility of endoscopic ultrasonography（EUS）com- bined with computed tomography（CT） in the preoperative staging of gastric cancer. Methods From January 2010 to March 2011, 56 patients with gastric cancer were preoperatively staged by a combina- tion of EUS and CT, followed by a post-operative pathological examination. The data were analyzed statistically. Results For tumor staging, EUS had a higher accuracy for T~ ,T2 and T4 staging, while CT helped for T：~ staging. The accuracy was the highest with a combination of EUS and CT （about 87. 5 %）. For node staging, EUS had a higher accuracy in N~j and N1 staging, while CT had advantage in N2 and N~ staging. The accuracy was the highest with a combination of EUS and CT （about 81. g ~）. Conclusion The combined use of EUS and CT is an effective strategy for prognostic preop- erative staging of gastric cancer. It can direct surgeons to develop comprehensive and effective thera- peutic strategies for cancer patients.
