Abstract:The study was aimed to investigate the influence of herbal extracts on the formation and stability of cream gel network. Matrine, glycyrrhetinic acid, emodin, paeonol, baicalin and berberinehydrochloride were taken as model drug. Span 60 and Tween 80 were used as compound emulsifier in the cream preparation. The herbal extracts were evaluated from aspects of drug solubility in oil, interaction with surfactants, interfacial activity between oil and water, visual stability of cream, gel network, physical and chemical properties. The results showed that matrine, glycyrrhetinic acid and emodin promote the formation and stability of gel network. Baicalin and berberinehydrochloride reduce the formation and stability of gel network. Paeonol has no significant impact on gel network. It is concluded that the complex physical and chemical properties of herbal extracts influence the effective formation, crosslinking and swelling of the gel network after the interaction with cream matrix.
Keywords:Gel network   herbal extracts   cream matrix   compatibility   physical stability
