| Abstract: | Serum screening of HDV markers (including HDAg, anti-HD and anti-HD IgM) in 529 cases of various clinical types of hepatitis demonstrated that the highest incidence of HDV markers was found in chronic active hepatitis B (48/176 or 27.3%). Also it is worthy of note that the incidence of HDV in the hepatocellular carcinoma patients was also as high as to 20 percent. It is suggested that the HDV infection may play a role in provoking the HBV infection to become malignent. In 4 HDV positive patients, their HBV markers were persistently negative (one of them was followed for 4 years). It was suspected that under certain conditions the defective virus (HDV) may infect the human body by itself without the coinfection of HBV. |
