Significance of the criteria evolution from DSM - IV to DSM - 5

This paper reviews the evolution of the criteria for the diagnosis of premature ejaculation in the United States. It focuses on the evolmion process from DSM - IV to DSM - 5, the clinical significance of the evolution, and the existing problems. DSM - IV has made a profound difference in the fields of andrology after it was introduced into China. Currently, the issuing of DSM - 5 is very likely to incur even greater interest in the studies of premature ejaculation. This paper, published before the final draft of DSM - 5, aims to pave the way for the future introduction of DSM - 5 into China. It is also an attempt to facilitate the fu- ture studies of premature ejaculation.
