Advances in Research into Relationship Between Adiponectin and Coronary Heart Disease

Adiponectin, a novel hormone made by fat tissue, is abundant in serum. Serum levels of adiponectin are reduced in conditions that are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, such as diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. Anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory properties of adiponectin and the ability to stimulate insulin sensitivity have made adiponectin an important object for physiological and pathophysiological studies seeking potential therapeutic applications. Adiponectin is an important molecule associated with atherosclerosis in the clinical setting. Measurement of plasma concentrations of adiponectin may be a helpful adjunct for the assessment of the risk of coronary artery disease. Plasma concentrations of adiponectin may be related to the development of coronary artery disease, even in acute coronary syndrome.
