Abstract:Patients in a chronic hemodialysis program were studied over a period of 2½ years to determine whether or not blood transfusions cause the development of cytotoxic antibodies. Blood exposure was moderate in quantity and varied in the type of processing used. No patient was demonstrated to have converted from negative serum cytotoxicity to positive serum cytotoxicity on the basis of blood transfusions given while on dialysis. The use of leukocyte-free blood, although theoretically desirable, was not shown to be necessary by this study.
