The effect of three main antiepileptic drugs on memory in epileptic children.

It was uncertain that antiepileptic drug impaired the congitive functions of epileptic children and its degrees.So the effects of sodium phenytoin,sodium valproate and carbamazepine on memory were assessed in 46 child cases who had generalized tonic clonic epilepsy.The memory test was applied before and after a 3-4 months course of treatment with these medicines.Sixteen age-match health controls were examined simultaneouly.The results have shown that after a 3-4 month period of treatment,when the drugs plasma levels were within their therapeutic ranges,Memory Quotients in the patients treated with sodium phenytoin was lower than those of controls ( P <0.05),but there were no significant differences between the patients treated with sodium valproate,carbamazepine and the controls.The conclusion was sodium phenytoin may affect memory,and short-term memory impairment was dominant in this area.Sodium valproate appeared no singificant injury on total memory,but it seem to affect short-term memory slightly.Carbamazepine did not seem to impair memory.
