The research progress on the relationship between gut microbiota and type 2 diabetes mellitus and probiotics

Metabolic diseases such as diabetes have been the most serious problems for our society. Recent studies show that the structure and function of gut microbiota in patients with type 2 diabetes differ from those in healthy people. Gut microbiota plays an important role in the early onset and deterioration of the diabetes. Probiotic are living organisms, which are helpful in the prevention and alleviation of type 2 diabetes by improving the intestinal permeability, enhancing immunity and other mechanisms. The rapid progress in this emerging field will not only contribute to the elucidation of the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, but also provide directions for exploring new therapeutic targets and pathways.
