Abstract: | The world's first test tube baby was born inEngland in July 1978, almost ten years ago. Irirccent years, the number of test tube babies hasincreas.ed rapidly from 3 000 in 1986 t0 6 000 in1987. Successful cases of iii vitro fertilizationand embryo transfer (1VF & ET) in Taiwan andHong Kong have been reported. The techniqucof gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) wasfirst described by Asch et al in 1984.1 We startcdthe IVF & ET research program in late1984 and worked out our own protocols inthe beginning of 1987. Thcre are now two casesof clinical pregnancy following lVF & ET and .
