Abstract:Using canonical correlation analysis and one way analysis of variance the relation between sets of anthropometric and metabolic variables was explored in free living individuals of Jiangsu rural areas. The objectives of these analyses are to determine the degree to which hypertention, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia cluster together, and to determine which clinical measure of obesity is most closely associated with such clustering. Canonical correlations were statistically significant between anthropometric and metabolic variables in all sex age specific groups. Standardized canonical coefficients from canonical analyses suggest that the weight for body mass index (BMI) is highest and positive in all sex age groups except for older group in men. Of the anthropometric variables, BMI consistently demonstrates the highest loading values. Of the metabolic variables the loading of blood pressure is generally the largest. BMI ranks most affected by the risk categorization. These analyses demonstrate significant clustering of hypertention, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia in individuals with obesity. It indicates that BMI is the single and simple measure of obesity most highly correlated with blood pressure.
