Epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors of drug abuse among MSM in Guangzhou

Objective To understand the drug abuse situation and influencing factors among men who have sex with men(MSM)in Guangzhou, and to explore the relationship between drug abuse and the incidence of HIV infection.Methods The data of MSM was collected by Guangzhou CDC. A cross-sectional survey was carried out via a selfadministrated questionnaire to collect information of demographic characteristics, living habits, mental health status,sexual orientation disclosure status, and HIV infection, etc. Chi-square test and logistic regression model was employed to analyze the associated factors of drug abuse. Results A total of 520 MSM were enrolled in the survey. Among them,27.9%(145) had a history of drug abuse, with the top 3 drugs of hypnotic(12.1%, 63), cannabis(4.6%, 24), and inhalants(4.6 %, 24) such as popper, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, suction gum, olfactory oil, etc. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that smoking(OR=2.856, 95%CI:1.648-4.982), the rates of drinking(with reference to the non-drinking in the past year, "almost every day", "3-4 times a week", "1-2 times a week" had statistical significance, OR=5.277, 4.18,3.273, 95%CI=1.272-21.891, 1.577-11.081, 1.411-7.591), sexual orientation disclosure status(with reference to no, "yes,come out to everyone" had statistical significance, OR=5.193, 95% CI:2.157-12.503), the three variables had an impact on the drug abuse of MSM group. Conclusion MSM group in Guangzhou have a serious substance abuse situation. It is necessary to strengthen the intervention of the group.
