Analysis of 1661 cases of visual disability in Yan′an area

Objective To analyze the causes and characteristics of visual disabilities in Yan′an area.Methods From May to July 2020,the Department of Ophthalmology,the Fourth Clinical Hospital of Yan′an University completed the visual disability examination and identification of cases in Yan′an area.The causes of visual disability were analyzed by collating data.Results The statistics of 1,661 cases of visually disabled persons in 12 districts and counties of Yan′an City,including 428 cases in Baota District (the central area of Yan′an),392 cases in the northern region:Zichang City and Yanchuan County,and eastern part: Yanchang County,Huanglong County and Yichuan County,305 cases; Southern region:Ganquan County,Luochuan County and Huangling County 257 cases,Western region: Ansai District,Zhidan County and Wuqi County 279 cases.In Yan′an area,visual disability and cataract took the first place,artificial eyes and eyeball atrophy(mostly caused by eye trauma) ranked second,followed by corneal disease,high myopia,glaucoma,fundus disease,refractive error,optic neuropathy,genetic or congenital disease,uveitis.People over the age of 50 accounted for 91%,men accounted for 52%,and women 48%; the visual disability rate in rural areas was significantly higher than that in urban areas.Conclusion Cataract will continue to be the main cause of blindness and low vision in Yan′an for a certain period of time.At the same time,paying attention to ocular trauma and reducing the visual disability caused by ocular trauma is another important direction for blindness prevention and treatment in the future.As age increases,the proportion of visual disabilities gradually increases.
