Abstract:Homocysteine is formed as an intermediate during methionine metabolism. Hcy is known to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and neurological diseases including epilepsy, stroke, cognitive disorders, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Epilepsy is one of the common diseases of neurology, and it has characteristics of episodic, transient, repetitive and stereotypic. One research has shown that severe hyperhomocysteinemia causes seizures and increases the frequency of seizures. But the interactions between hyperhomocysteinemia and seizures are rare reported in China. This review focuses on the interactions among homocysteinemia, NMDA receptors and epilepsy to further explore the pathogenesis of epilepsy and provides new clinical treatments.
Keywords:homocysteine  epilepsy  N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor
