External fixation with flexible cotton for emergency treatment of multiple fractures of multiple ribs

Objective： To investigate the effects of external fixation with flexible contton（EFFC） for emergency treatment of multiple fractures of multiple ribs（MFMR）.Methods： Flexible contton combined with wide tape was applied for fixation of floating chest for patients with MFMR.Pulse rate,respiratory rate,pulse oxygen saturation and visual analogue scale（VAS） before and after the fixation was observed and compared.Results： After EFFC treatment,patients′ symptoms were alleviated,pulse rate,respiratory rate,visual analogue scale（VAS） decreased but,pulse oxygen saturation increased（P0.05）.Most patients showed even respiration,increased efforts in sputum coughing and could cooperated in treatment.Four patients（6.6%） still complained of sever pain and was given oral pain killer pills.EFFC was removed in 2 patients（3.3%） due to chest suffocation and 1 patient（1.6%） because of allergic dermatitis.Conclusions： EFFC fixation is a simple but effective emergency treatment for patients with MFMR,and is worth for application in large scale.
