Increasing intestinal absorption of drugs by formulation

The biological potency of steroid hormones was increased by formulation with cholesterol, or its esters, in proportions at which the drugs form a solid solution. Improved intestinal absorption was most likely achieved by increasing the contransport of the drugs with the lipid into the lymphatic system. Increases in blood concentrations were highest for hormones possessing a short biological half-life.
