High Altitude Migrants Return to the Plain: The Changes of Electrocardiogram

Objective:To observe the change of the electrocardiogram(ECG) and to study whether the right ventricular hypertrophy(RVH) or the ascendency of right ventricular voltages induced by ambient hypoxia could be reduced after the altitude migrants return to the plain.Methods:240 healthy plateau migrants(aged 50~84 years),the returned group,(RG),who used to live at 2 261m~4 200m altitudes for over 10 years,and have returned to plain for 3~12 years now,were researched.197 agematched healthy plain residents were served as control group(PRG).Right ventricular voltages(RVV) were measured and RVH were diagnosed according to the ECG.Results:RVV and RVH incidences of the RG are higher than that of PRG(P<0.01).The incidences of RVH are correlated with the living time at the altitude and age.Conclusions:The results suggest that ascendency of right ventricle couldn’t be reduced in partial plateau residents after they returned to plain for livelihood from high altitude.
