Abstract:Objective To establish a new injury model of goat cervical spinal cord compression for MRI research. Methods Twelve goats were randomly divided into two groups: compression group and control group (each n=6). A balloon catheter was inserted into the epidural space via intervertebral foramen. In compression group, the balloon was inflated by slow injection of 0.2 ml of saline 10 days following operation and remained 40 days. In control group, the balloon was not inflated. All models were evaluated with MRI, locomotor rating score and pathology. Results In compression group, the spinal cord was moderately compressed after the balloon was inflated and the locomotor rating scores decreased. Histopathologically, swelling and degeneration of axons and neurons, inflammatory cell could be seen under examination of light microscope. The disarrangement of myelin sheathes and degeneration of chondriosome could be seen under examination of transmission electron microscopy. In control group, all the examinations were normal. Conclusion The goat cervical spinal cord compression injury model is suitable for research on acute or gradual spinal cord compression injury (SCCI), and is of great value for the research on physiopathology of SCCI with MRI.
