Application of DNA methylation in ocular disease treatment and effects of Chinese medicine on regulation of DNA methylation

As one of the most important mechanisms in epigenetics, DNA methylation modifies the whole epigenome without changing DNA sequence, which is heritable and plays a significant role in life activities. The rapid development of this field, highlighted the importance of the non-genetic factors such as environment, broke the bottleneck of solely using genetics research method, and found a new breakthrough to explore the pathological mechanism. The methylation modification has become today＇s hot spot, and a large amount of literatures showed a correlation between abnormal state of DNA methylation and eye disease. Mature drugs regulating DNA methylation still stayed blank, while Chinese medicine treatments showed significant effects on such field. Therefore, Chinese medicine may have the potential to treat ocular disease through methylation regulation. This article summarized the research development of DNA methylation in ocular disease and the regulation function of Chinese medicine treatment on DNA methylation, and hopes for helping to develop Chinese medicine regulation function on this new field.
