Abstract:The haematological status was studied in 85 patients with acute ischaemic cerebrovascular events and was compared with that in a group of control subjects with a similar age distribution. Raised haemoglobin concentrations (above 15 g/100 ml) and haematocrit values (above 45%) were significantly more frequent in patients in the acute stage of ischaemic stroke than in the control group.A direct influence of the central nervous system on erythropoetic tissue activity in the acute stage of ischaemic stroke is suggested. The possible influence of the polycythaemic reaction on cerebral haemodynamic processes in patients with acute ischaemic stroke is stressed.
