In the Song dynasty, the central government paid great attention to medical education and examination.Medical examination was included into the imperial examinations category. There were strict rules for the exami-nation management system. The examination mainly stressed skills necessary for clinical practice with standard-ized testing items. The baton function of governmental examination largely promoted the occurrence of medicalscholars, spreading of the doctrine of five elements' motion and six kinds of natural factors, and the existence ofthe discipline of Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases.
