Effects of colpocleisis on the symptoms and quality of life in elderly women with pelvic organ prolapse

Objective： To observe the effects of colpocleisis on the symptoms and quality of life in elderly women with pelvic organ prolapse （POP）. Methods： From October 2005 to February 2010,60 patients with severe POP stage Ill and IV as classified with POP-Q system underwent total and partial colpocleisis. Patients completed the pelvic floor distress inventory short form （PFDI-20） and pelvic floor impact questionnaire short form （PFIQ-7） before the operation, and they were repeated 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year, respectively, after the operation. Results：Among the 60 patients, 56（93%）, 53（88%） and 52（87%） patients filled the questionnaires 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year after the operation respectively. Mean PFDI-20 score was improved significantly from 76.78± 40. 71 at baseline to 15.73±10. 55 at 2 months, 11.11±8. 23 at 6 months and 11.06±8. 20 at 1 year after the operation. Mean PFIQ-7 score was improved significantly from 82. 41 ±32.49 at baseline to 17. 88 ± 18.12 at 2 months, 12.93±14.74 at 6 months, and 12.77±14. 64 at 1 year after the operation（P= 0. 000）.
