Aseptic necrosis of the femoral head in a white boy with S-D hemoglobinopathy

Abstract:A case of aseptic necrosis of the femoral head is reported in a 10 and 1/2 year old white male with hemoglobin S-D disease. The patient also had functional asplenia and a history of hand-foot syndrome in infancy. The radiographic, clinical, and hematologic similarities, as well as the differences between S-D and S-S hemoglobinopathy are discussed.
