Abstract:Various catheters are used in providing care to children. Infection is a major complication related to use of these catheters because they bypass normal defenses and provide access to normally sterile sites. Treatment of catheter-related infections often is difficult and frequently requires removal of the device. Prevention of infection begins with limiting use of catheters. Other critical measures include using aseptic technique during insertion of catheters; meticulous care of catheters; limited manipulation of all catheters; maintaining sterile technique during preparation of fluids and medications; and preparing infusion hubs and ports before use. Education of patients and care providers is essential and effective. Copyright © 2001 by W.B. Saunders Company
