Abstract: | The effect of cell surface gp70 expression on reinfection by murine leukemia virus was studied in Friend virus (FV)-induced erythroleukemia cell clones. A clone (2C) which released gp70-positive infectious virions and expressed large amounts of cell surface ecotropic FV gp70 was not superinfectable by ecotropic viruses, whereas another clone (7C) which expressed similar amounts of cell surface FV gp70 but released gp70-deficient virions showed no resistance to superinfection. The lack of interference to superinfection of 7C cells suggested that newly budded gp70-positive virions, rather than cell surface gp70 molecules, were responsible for the interference to superinfection seen in 2C cells which released infectious virus. |
