Patents filed for prevention and control of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)

Objective To analyze the patent applications filed and approved for the prevention and control of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)to provide evidence for the R&D of COVID-19 patents.Methods Using incoPat as a patent search tool,we searched for patent applications up to June 21,2020,using Chinese and English keywords including coronavirus disease 2019,new coronavirus pneumonia,novel coronavirus,new coronavirus,COVID-19,2019-nCoV,and SARS-CoV-2 in the titles,abstracts,and claims.The results were analyzed in terms of overall overview,applicants,patent technology,regional distribution,patent value,and patent subject using the bibliometric method.Results The initial search yielded 366 patent documents,and 328 were included after duplicates and other irrelevant material were eliminated.Most patent applications were from China's Mainland.The overall status of COVID-19 patent applications was good,and the value of these patents was high.The priorities of patent R&D included medicinal treatment,virus detection,and protective product R&D.The regional distribution of patent applications varied greatly.Conclusion COVID-19 patent applications are still in the preliminary stage.In the future,enhanced coordination among different regions and strengthened cooperation among patent owners will improve the quality of patented technologies and their R&D,promote the transformation of technical achievements,and accelerate the R&D of vaccines and drugs for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
