The effect of subgingival glycine powder air-polishing used as an additional approach on elderly patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis

Objective:To observe the improvement of periodontal inflammation and the changes of diabetes related indexes in the elderly with diabetic periodontitis after subgingival glycine powder air-polishing.Methods:Forty elderly patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis who were treated in the Department of Stomatology of Zhejiang Hospital from June 2018 to June 2019 were included in this single blind randomized controlled clinical trial.After baseline examination,each patient was randomly divided into 2 groups(n=20)and treated by SRP(group A)and SRP+subgingival glycine powder air-polishing(group B)respectively.In clinical examination,probing depth(PPD),bleeding index(BI),plaque indicator(PLI),probing bleeding rate(BOP),C-reactive protein(CRP),hemoglobin a1c(HbA1c)were observed at baseline and 1 and 3 months after treatment.Results:The PPD、BOP of group A and B decreased successively at baseline,1 month after treatment,and 3 months after treatment(P<0.001).1 month and 3 months after treatment,the PLI and BI of group B was lower than those of group A.The PPD decreased faster in the group B than group A.3 months after treatment,the CRP and HbA1c(P<0.05)of group A and B were all lower than baseline.The reduction of the group B was better than that of the group A(P<0.05).Conclusion:SRP combined subgingival glycine powder air-polishing is more effective than SRP in the treatment of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis.
