An Observation on the Spinal Roots of the Accessory Nerve and Its Relation to the Posterior Roots of the Upper Cervical Nerves

The spinal roots of the accessory nerve were observed in 110 cadavers (54 adults and 57 children). The lowest rootlet of the spinal accessory nerve emerged mostly from the segments of C3 and C4(85%).The number of the rootlets averaged 6.9 (3-15) in each case. Anastomotic connections between the spinal accessory root and the posterior root of the first cervical nerve were seen in 81.36% and were grouped into 5 types. The ganglion of the accessory nerve was seen in 50%, mostly at the point where the first cervical nerve connected with the spinal accessory-nerve. The sensory neurons were seen in the ganglion and the root of spinal accessory nerve.
