Keep pace and progress with time: scientific development and perspectives for oral and maxillofacial surgery in China between 2006 and 2010

Great achievements have been made in oral and maxillofacial surgery during the past 20 years in China. However,with the rapid progress of science and technology,especially great advances in life science,oral and maxillofacial surgery must keep pace with time to bring a prosperous future.This paper discusses the contemporary progress trends in life science and medicine,the features of researches on life science and clinical medicine in the 21st century,and predicts the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China between 2006 and 2010 based on the understanding of the current status and national developing strategies on science and technology.Considering the future prospects of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China,construction of academic organizations and training of specialists must be addressed. Standardized treatments,regular follow up and adequate evaluation should be further improved,individualized comprehensive management of various oral and maxillofacial (OMS) disorders such as neoplasms,cleft lip and palate, vascular anomalies,trauma etc should be adopted widely,integration of science,technology and medicine should be strengthened,novel cross-sectional disciplines need to be explored,and finally basic researches particularly on congenital inherited OMS diseases should be promoted.Altogether,the complexity of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the 21st century will increase,necessitating the best and widely trained oral and maxillofacial surgeons for successful accomplishment.
